The Mount Gambier Showjumping Club was formed in the late 1970’s, by a group of enthusiasts wanting to promote the sport in the local area. The club has flourished since its inception and is now considered one of the most innovative clubs in Australia.
The club hosts two major showjumping events each year in the Velodrome at Blue Lake Sports Park
The Easter Showjumping Festival, and
The Junior/Young Rider Carnival – held in January.
The vision of the group who started the club was to foster the sport and develop a premier showjumping event in a unique facility. Their planning came to fruition in 1982 when the first Easter Showjumping Festival was held. The event has grown over the years and is now recognised as one of the top events in South Australia. The Easter Festival is one of the longest running horse shows in the country and over the years splayed host to some of the nation’s top horses and riders. Several have gone on to represent Australia overseas and at the Olympic Games.
As showjumping continued to grow in popularity the club saw the need to encourage our juniors …. the Junior/Young Rider Carnival was born. The Carnival is the only showjumping event in South Australia, of its caliber, that is dedicated to our Juniors and Young Riders.
In 2004 the Club hosted the Australian Showjumping Championships. Jumping events were held on both the Velodrome and the adjacent football oval. This show has become the benchmark for national showjumping events held since, with editorial in equestrian magazines and web sites describing it as the best event of its type ever held in this country.
For the past 20 years the club has been manufacturing its own international standard showjumping equipment. We now have enough jumps of this standard to supply two separate arenas.
The jumps have been used at some of Australia’s biggest horse shows, namely: Australian Showjumping Championships, Hermes International Showjumping – Sydney, The Asian Pacific Games – Werribee, Royal Adelaide Show, Busker’s Festival – Mortlake, Gawler Three Day Event, Adelaide International Horse Trials and the Naracoorte Three Day Event.
The Club supports the regional Agricultural Shows by providing jumping equipment for the Mount Gambier, Mil-lel, Casterton and Dartmoor Shows.
Many past and present members of the club have gone on to compete all over Australia and Internationally.
Robert Hynes, whose father Sam was a founding member of the club, is now based in Europe as a professional Showjumping rider and has notched up many successes in his career.
Dr Denis Goulding BVS is a former committee member and now the Official Olympic vet for Australian teams travelling overseas. He was there when Australia won three gold medals at the Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney Olympic Games. Although he is overseas on a regular basis he still finds time to take an interest in the Club.
John Wilsher, FEI approved international course designer. John is a founding member of the club and is now the resident course designer at most Junior / Young Rider and Easter events. He was assistant course designer at the Atlanta Olympic Games and builds showjumping courses throughout Australia and overseas. He is also an Olympic Selector for Australian teams travelling overseas.
